Is Hotel Wi-Fi Safe? A Las Vegas Traveler's Guide

For most travelers, hotel Wi-Fi is safe enough for ordinary use. Modern websites and apps encrypt their own traffic, so the network you join is no longer the weak point it was a decade ago. The risks that remain on Las Vegas hotel, casino and convention Wi-Fi are mostly about who you think you are connecting to and what you type once you are connected — and both are manageable with a few habits.

Is hotel Wi‑Fi safe to use? The short answer

Yes, for browsing, streaming, messaging and checking your reservation. Hotel Wi-Fi is a shared network run by a third party, which means the operator can see which sites you connect to, and other people on the network are closer to you than they would be at home. It does not mean your banking session is being read. Treat it as a public space: fine for most things, worth extra care for a few.

HTTPS protects your data. It does not secure the network.

These are two different things, and confusing them is where most bad advice starts.

  • HTTPS encrypts the contents of your session between your device and the website. Someone watching the network sees that you connected to your bank, not your password or balance. Nearly all major sites and apps use it, and browsers warn you loudly when a page does not.
  • The network itself — an open hotel SSID — is not encrypted in the same way. The operator, and in some setups other devices, can observe which servers you talk to and how much. That is metadata, not content.

So the practical question is not "is this network encrypted" but "is this the real network, and is this the real login page".

The realistic risks on shared Wi‑Fi

Fake or similarly named access points

This is the risk worth caring about. Anyone can broadcast a network called "Resort_Guest_WiFi" or "Casino Free WiFi" from a device in a bag. If you join a fake network, its operator controls the connection itself — they may show you a convincing fake login (captive portal) page, see which sites you connect to, or interfere with anything that isn't encrypted. They can't simply read a properly secured HTTPS session, but they choose the first page you see, and that's where the trouble starts. Get the exact network name from the front desk, your key packet or the in-room card, and match it character for character. On a big property, the correct name is usually the same everywhere; a network that only appears near one bank of slot machines deserves suspicion.

Fake login and portal pages

A typical hotel guest network may ask for details such as your room number and last name. Be suspicious of a portal asking for unrelated passwords, unexpected payment information, or software or certificate installation. Anything asking for more than the hotel would plausibly need is a reason to disconnect and ask at the desk.

Automatic rejoining

Phones remember open networks and rejoin them silently. After your trip, that means your device may connect to any network sharing that name. Turning off auto-join for open networks, and forgetting the network at checkout, removes the problem.

Outdated devices

An unpatched browser or operating system is a bigger practical exposure than the network you are on. Update before you travel.

Las Vegas specifics: casino, convention and airport Wi‑Fi

Las Vegas concentrates enormous numbers of people onto a handful of very large networks, which changes the texture of the advice rather than the advice itself.

  • Resort and casino floors. Guest Wi-Fi usually covers the rooms, the casino and the restaurants under one name, and on many properties access is bundled into the resort fee you are already paying. Because the same SSID blankets a huge public space, a lookalike network is easier to hide here than in a small hotel — verify the name once and let your device remember only that one.
  • Convention centers. During a large show, the network is saturated and often has separate exhibitor and attendee SSIDs with codes handed out on paper. Use the code from the official show materials, not one found on a nearby screen.
  • Harry Reid International Airport. Free airport Wi-Fi is the same category of network. It is fine for a boarding pass and email; it is where auto-join habits do the most damage, because you pass through quickly and rarely look at what you joined.
  • Coffee shops and food halls. Small networks, informal names, and staff who may not know the official SSID. Ask, or use cellular.

Banking, reservations and email on hotel Wi‑Fi

Checking a bank balance or a hotel reservation over hotel Wi-Fi is not reckless — those sessions are encrypted end to end and protected by your account's own login. The sensible precautions are about your account, not the network: multi-factor authentication, a password manager so you never retype a password into a lookalike page, and using your bank's app rather than a link you were sent. If you would rather not do it on shared Wi-Fi at all, your cellular connection is right there and is the simplest alternative.

What a VPN does — and what it does not do

A VPN (virtual private network) creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server run by the VPN provider. Your traffic leaves your device wrapped in that tunnel and exits at the provider's server.

What that gets you

  • The network operator and anyone else on the shared Wi-Fi can no longer see which sites you are visiting — only that you are connected to a VPN.
  • Sites you visit see the VPN server's IP address rather than the hotel's, which is a privacy layer, not anonymity.
  • A consistent encrypted path when you are hopping between hotel, casino, convention and airport networks all week.

What it does not do

  • It does not stop phishing. A convincing fake login page works just as well inside a tunnel.
  • It does not remove malware or replace security updates on your device.
  • It does not prevent identity theft or account takeover on its own.
  • It does not make you untrackable. Logging into your accounts identifies you regardless of the IP address you arrive from.
  • It does not add security to a site that is already encrypted end to end.

A VPN is one component of safe browsing on shared networks — useful, and not a substitute for updates, MFA and a sceptical eye on login pages.

  1. Confirm the exact network name with the front desk or your key packet before connecting — not from the list of nearby networks.
  2. Turn off automatic joining for open networks so your phone doesn't reconnect to a lookalike hotspot elsewhere on the property.
  3. Update your phone, laptop and browser before you leave home; hotel Wi-Fi is a poor place to download a large update.
  4. Turn on multi-factor authentication for email, banking and your airline and hotel accounts.
  5. Look for the padlock and the correct domain before entering a password — especially on any page that appears after you join the network.
  6. Treat pop-ups asking you to install software or a certificate to 'complete' the Wi-Fi login as a reason to stop.
  7. Use your phone's cellular hotspot for anything genuinely sensitive if the signal is good.
  8. Keep file sharing and AirDrop-style discovery off while on a shared network.
  9. Consider a VPN for an added privacy layer on shared networks.
  10. Log out of the hotel portal and forget the network when you check out.
